Refugee Welcome Programme
The Refugee Welcome Programme is designed to help refugees and people seeking asylum in Greater Manchester build a brighter future. It focuses on work and skills development, offering practical support to improve wellbeing, learn English, and prepare for employment.
Through this programme, participants can access:
English language support
- English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) classes from beginner to advanced levels, including practical English for everyday life (shopping, appointments, work tasks)
- flexible sessions available at different times, including school hours and evenings for working participants
- community interpreters and translated materials provided at specific sessions
- access to Functional English and Maths classes
- informal ESOL sessions available, combined with skills-learning activities like cooking or sewing – practise vocabulary while making friends in a friendly group setting
Wellbeing support
- trauma-informed therapy in multiple languages
- peer-led groups and mindfulness workshops to improve mental health, reduce isolation and help rebuild lives in safety
Employment readiness
- practical support: CV writing, interview preparation, digital skills and vocational training
- guidance on workers’ rights and support with exploring self-employment opportunities
- help with converting educational certificates from your home country – ideal for professionals such as teachers, engineers, carers and chefs
- healthcare qualification pathway: mentoring and support to gain entry-level healthcare qualifications
Skills development and volunteering
- weekly workshops in hospitality, catering, and textile repair – learn to prepare meals, manage hygiene, collaborate in teams, and transform donated fabrics
- Roots Kitchen: a Stockport-based initiative supporting refugee and asylum-seeking women to develop practical skills and confidence
- opportunities to connect, share meals, and learn together in a welcoming environment
- discover volunteering opportunities, make friends and practise English while having fun
Additional support available during sessions
- free childcare on site for parents
- travel reimbursement available
- sessions inspired by successful stories from peers and often led by people with lived experience
- provision of food and bicycles, plus training in bike maintenance skills
Most sessions sessions are open to all; others are tailored for young people, women-only or men-only groups.
