Support in school

Schools will work with pupils and their parents/carers to improve attendance where it becomes a concern. Problems can usually be addressed early if schools and parents/carers work together.

The school will:

  • arrange meetings with the parents/carers and pupil
  • identify any additional learning needs the pupil may have
  • identify any other barriers, such as friendship issues, anxiety about school or health issues
  • where appropriate, make referrals to outside agencies, including council services

It’s important that parents/carers engage with the school and attend all meetings to discuss concerns about attendance.

If the problem continues, schools may arrange more formal meetings and may also require parents/carers to produce medical evidence before they agree to authorise further absences from school.
