Education Supervision Order

If other types of support have not succeeded in resolving attendance problems, an Education Supervision Order may be considered.

Education Supervision Orders give the council a formal role in advising and directing the parents/carers and pupil to make sure the pupil receives a suitable full-time education.

The order initially lasts for one year, but can be extended within the last 3 months for a period of up to 3 years at a time.

For the duration of the Education Supervision Order, the parents/carers have a duty to comply with any directions given by the council. This may require the parents/carers to:

  • attend support meetings
  • attend a parenting programme or counselling
  • access support services
  • take part in an assessment by an educational psychologist or other professional

Where parents/carers persistently fail to comply with the directions given under the Education Supervision Order, they may be guilty of an offence and face prosecution.
