The initial 12 month test
Before the test
To prepare for the test, make sure you read and understand the information in your responsibilities.
Before the test, you'll be given an emissions test questionnaire. You must complete this unless the examiner deems it unnecessary.
After the test
After the test, you'll receive:
- a test report, with details of the items that have been examined
- a Certificate of Compliance, if your vehicle has passed the test
The test report
Section A of the test report refers to the MOT testable items. Vehicles submitted for test must meet the minimum standards set by the MOT testing requirements. In some cases, the taxi test has a higher standard, for example, tyre tread depth.
Section B refers to the supplementary items that are tested under the provisions of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976.

What you need to provide
After your vehicle has passed the 12 month test, you must provide us with receipt of:
- the online application
- payment of the licence fee
- the Certificate of Compliance and test report
- a valid certificate of insurance. This can either be a copy uploaded with your application, or an emailed copy sent directly to us from your insurance provider
Your licence and plates will then be sent in the post by recorded delivery to your licence address.
Your plates will be issued for 12 months from the date of the vehicle test, not the date of the vehicle application.
The 6 month compliance test
The vehicle will need a further compliance test within the following 6 months.
You can find more information on the following page on the 6 month compliance test.
