5. Market Place and Underbanks
TCAP is delivering a public realm improvement scheme for Lower Hillgate and Little Underbank including new street furniture, paving upgrades and road reconstruction.
The first phase of works to enhance the roads and accessibility was substantially complete in March 2020. In recognition of the urgent need to repair the existing failures, the road was excavated and resurfaced between the automatic bollards and Royal Oak Yard.
A temporary, flexible road surface material (tarmac) has been laid. This was used in consideration of the existing failures and upcoming redevelopments adjacent to this section that require localised excavations. Localised pavement repairs will also be undertaken and street furniture will be re-painted.
Phase 2 of the works involves the full reconstruction of the carriageway and paving between Royal Oak Yard and the roundabout at the westerly end of Little Underbank.
Update April 2021
The works are substantially complete. The remaining works left to complete in this phase include:
- localised areas of paving
- street furniture installations
- street lighting
- some works by utilities companies
Some of these works have been delayed due to the coronavirus and supply chain issues.
The road re-opened to vehicles on Monday 12 April.
As before the works, vehicle access for residents, servicing and loading will be before 10.30am and/or after 4pm. The pedestrian zone restriction applies between 10.30am and 4pm, during which no motor vehicles are permitted. No waiting will be between 8am and 6pm.
Other works in the area are ongoing, including property developments / refurbishments on Little Underbank and minor carriageway repairs at Deanery Way. Some of the footway paving work could not be carried out alongside these works, but will be completed when possible.
Once adjacent redevelopment works have been completed, we'll revisit the Phase 1 area between the automatic bollards and Royal Oak Yard with full reconstruction and paving.
