Temporary changes to school admissions appeals
Last updated 5 June 2020
1. Changes to the school admission appeal process
On 24 April 2020, the government issued new regulations and the Department for Education provided new guidance to the way admission authorities will carry out admission appeals this year. The new regulations temporarily amend the existing 2012 Appeal Regulations and give admission authorities, local authorities and admission appeal panels more flexibility when dealing with appeals during the coronavirus outbreak. This is because schools are closed and face to face appeal hearings cannot take place until government guidelines on social distancing say it's safe to do so.
As a result, we'll be complying with the government guidelines applicable at the time of arranging and hearing the appeals.
The new regulations will apply to any appeals submitted between 24 April 2020 and 31 January 2021 and any appeals lodged prior to this, which have not yet been decided.
