Supporting our workforce

Here at Stockport Council, we support our colleagues in every aspect of working life, and we have a range of employee networks and support groups to help with this. Our groups are run by our own colleagues, and we encourage our people to join them to help them flourish at work.

Each of the groups has a designated Corporate Leader as a sponsor who acts as an ambassador and champion for their group. Colleagues are allowed to take time away from their job to attend monthly sessions and catch up with their group.

Each group has a designated Microsoft Teams chat to catch up on things relating to their areas. This is a safe space to discuss challenges and offer support and advice.

We also call on our networks and groups to help keep Equality, Diversity and Inclusion high on the agenda. We consult members for support in making key changes to policies and processes.

Our network and support groups include:

Bereavement Network

Our Bereavement Network is a supportive space to meet with other colleagues who have experienced a bereavement personal to them. It offers a chance to talk to other colleagues, share experiences and be supported by peers who have experienced a bereavement. This may be recent or many years ago, as there is no time frame for grief.

LGBTQ+ Network

Our LGBTQ+ Network is here to support staff who identify as LGBTQ+, and their allies. The group has hybrid meetings monthly to discuss any LGBTQ+ related work within the council and have an informal chat.

The group is here for staff to:

  • receive peer support
  • be part of a community
  • campaign
  • challenge
  • model an environment of inclusivity and visibility

Sponsorship Network

The Sponsorship Network aims to connect employees that receive sponsorship from Stockport Council, to share experiences, advice and support. The members work alongside HR to share resources and information to help navigate careers, as well as life outside of work, as some members have recently moved to Stockport from various locations in the UK and overseas. We can help signpost people and resources that can assist with queries and concerns.

Staff Dis-Ability Network

Our Staff Dis-ability Network is a safe, informal space to meet with other colleagues living long-term health conditions and disabilities. The group meet each month to talk about our challenges and successes relating to our working roles.
