Enhanced DBS certificate

All taxi drivers must have an up-to-date enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate.

Whether you're a new or existing driver, you may find it useful to visit the Personnel Checks website for answers to frequently asked questions about DBS checks.

New drivers

Drivers will firstly be asked by our partner Taxi Plus to complete their ID verification online through our platform, using a service called Yoti.

If the online ID verification is unsuccessful, the driver will then be asked to attend a Post Office, where their identity documents can be verified.

Apply for an enhanced DBS certificate

Note: the DBS fee is not included in the cost of the licence and is payable to Taxiplus along with an administration charge. Payment can be made by card. Call 01254 355 665.

If you have any convictions listed on your DBS certificate, your application will be reviewed by the Licensing, Environment and Safety Committee.

Existing drivers

Once you become a licensed driver it's your responsibility to make sure that you subscribe to the DBS Update Service. You can find information on the DBS Update Service at GOV.UK.

It's a condition of your licence to subscribe to the DBS update service. You'll only need to submit a new certificate if there are any changes reported by the DBS. You must provide us with your update service details so that we can carry out the necessary checks throughout the duration of your licence and at renewal.

If your DBS is due in the next 6 weeks and you're not subscribed to the DBS Update Service, you must contact Taxiplus to renew it. Call 01254 355 665.

If your current DBS does not have an active Update Service Subscription set up on it, or you cannot provide a copy of an enhanced DBS certificate from another licensing authority with an active subscription, you will need to apply for a new enhanced SMBC DBS as soon as possible.

Make sure you're aware of all of your key dates. You risk your licence being suspended if you fail to keep up the subscription.

If you cannot subscribe to the DBS Update Service

If you're unable to subscribe to the DBS Update Service for any reason, then you must submit a new enhanced DBS certificate every 6 months. It's your responsibility to make sure you submit this to Taxi Licensing on time.

Your enhanced DBS certificate must include the following details:

  • other work force: Taxi Driver
  • name of employer: Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council

Make sure you're aware of all of your key dates. You licence will be suspended if you do not submit the certificate in time.
