Carer's assessment

Carers look after relatives, friends, partners or neighbours who, because of an illness or disability, cannot manage at home without help.

If you're caring for someone you're entitled to an assessment of your own needs, regardless of the needs of the person you look after. This can be done at the same time as the care assessment for the person you care for or it can be done separately.

It's your opportunity to tell us about the things that could support you in your caring role.

An adult carer’s assessment looks at:

  • how caring affects your life and wellbeing
  • how you can carry on or start doing the things that are important to you
  • what help you might need

We may ask another agency to carry out your assessment on our behalf. We would ask your permission first.
