Project information

The £145 million Stockport Exchange development is being delivered in partnership with Muse Developments.

Phases 1, 2, 3 and 4 are already complete. Planning permission has been granted for phase 5, which will see 60,000 square feet of office space created with ground floor opportunities available for shops, cafes, bars or restaurants. Phases 6, 7 and 8 have also been granted outline planning permission for office space, plus the potential option of residential properties.

The transformation is stunning. Stockport Exchange has been described by some as "Stockport's latest wow spot" and others as "Stockport's Spinningfields."

Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) 2025

We made the Metropolitan Borough Council of Stockport (72-74 Wellington Road South, Stockport SK1 3SU) Compulsory Purchase Order 2025 (the “Order”) on 3 July 2025. The purpose of the Order is to secure the land required to deliver the comprehensive mixed-use regeneration scheme we call ‘Stockport Exchange’. You can find a copy of the Order, the Order map, our Statement of Reasons (which set out our reasons for making the order) and the Notice of Making the Order on our Stockport Exchange Compulsory Purchase Order documents page.

The Order was submitted to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government (the “Secretary of State”) for confirmation on 7 August 2025, following expiry of a 28-day objection period.

One objection to the Order was received during the objection period. We received notification from the Planning Inspectorate that a public inquiry was due to be held to consider whether the Order should be confirmed by the Secretary of State. Details of this were confirmed in a Notice of Inquiry which was uploaded to this webpage, posted on the site, and published in a local newspaper.

Read our Statement of Case, Statements of Evidence and accompanying Summaries, which set out the case for the confirmation of the Order. These have been submitted to the Planning Inspectorate and served on the objector. You can also find hard copies of these documents at Stockport Town Hall, Edward Street, Stockport SK1 3XE between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

A public inquiry in connection with the Order was held on 1 April 2026. Read the:

The Order has been confirmed following the public inquiry. Visit our document page to find a copy of the confirmed CPO and accompanying maps.

The Notice of Confirmation of the CPO was published in the Stockport Express on 6 May 2026. You can find a copy on our Stockport Exchange Compulsory Purchase Order documents page.

Phase 4 (completed 2023)

Phase 4 of Stockport Exchange saw a 64,000 square foot office building created, plus a 399-space multi-storey car park with a ‘living wall’.

Work began in April 2022 and was completed in December 2023.

Phase 3 (completed 2020)

Phase 3 saw the completion of 2 Stockport Exchange, a 60,000 square foot, 6-storey Grade A office building developed next to existing office 1 Stockport Exchange.

Work on the office building began in November 2018 and was completed in Spring 2020.

Phase 2 (completed 2016)

Work on phase 2 of Stockport Exchange began in September 2015 and was completed in late 2016.

The completion of works was quickly followed by the opening of Holiday Inn Express in December 2016. The 115-bed hotel provides an ideal place for people to stay, whether in Stockport for work or pleasure. Since opening, the hotel has proven very popular with high visitor levels and great reviews online.

Only 6 months after work on the office was completed, the office building was fully let. This proves the demand for Grade A office space in Stockport. More companies are looking into the north-west's best and most popular business locations.

Phase 1 (completed 2014)

Phase 1 of Stockport Exchange created a new 1,000 multi-storey car park, operated by NCP. This has provided onsite parking for businesses.

There's also a dedicated cycle centre with lockers and changing rooms. Highway and pedestrian access improvements are now completed.

You can find information on the car park's tariffs on the NCP website.
