What is a design code?

We're committed to making sure that new development promotes the highest design quality. This means that places and spaces are designed to look visually attractive and be inclusive and accessible, allowing all our residents to live happy and healthy lives.

A design code is a set of simple and concise design requirements which outline the things that have to be considered for new development in an area. Their purpose is to clearly set out the design requirements that developers are expected to meet.

The government’s National Planning Policy Framework makes it clear that all local authorities should prepare design guides and codes that reflect local character and design preferences.

The design code, once adopted, will form part of the development plan for Stockport. This means that we'll use it to help make decisions on planning applications, helping to shape the design of new development.
