We're committed to making sure that new development promotes the highest design quality. This means that places and spaces are designed to look visually attractive and be inclusive and accessible to allow all our residents to live happy and healthy lives.
A design code is a set of simple and concise design requirements which outline the parameters for new development in an area. Their purpose is to provide clarity about design expectations through the planning application process.
The government’s National Planning Policy Framework makes clear that all local authorities should prepare design guides and codes that reflect local character and design preferences.
Once adopted, the design code will form part of the development plan. This means it will be used during the development management process to shape the design of new development.
Visit the Design Council to read more about design codes.
We will be consulting on our Design Code soon.
