We're collaborating with young people, communities and businesses to raise awareness, educate and act on climate change; working together to create a climate and nature friendly Stockport. We'll make our engagement more diverse, inclusive and accessible.
We're creating spaces for young people to shape climate decision making through our Youth Climate Assembly.
We'll maximise opportunities to grow our green economy and make Stockport an attractive place for green investment and jobs. We'll do this through support for businesses and creating the right conditions for sustainable growth.
What we need to do
To keep reducing emissions and pollution, we need big changes to happen at national, regional and local levels. For example, we need energy from the national grid to come from renewable sources and public transport to be low carbon and easy to use.
But these changes also rely on all of us making climate and nature friendly choices wherever we can. For example, saving money on our energy bills by reducing how much energy we use at home or work, and helping to make our air less polluted by choosing to use public transport, walking or wheeling. We need everyone to do what they can, when they can.
Where we're starting from
The UK government measures the levels of greenhouse gas emissions in every area of the country. This shows that emissions in Stockport have gone down by 45% since 2005. The main reason for this is that we don’t burn coal to provide electricity anymore and have instead increased the amount of renewable and nuclear energy produced.
Every year in Stockport, just over a million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions are emitted. Typically, a third of greenhouse gas emissions come from our transport, like vehicles, buses and trains. A third comes from the energy we use to heat and power our homes. Around a quarter comes comes from energy used by industry and the commercial sector, and the remainder comes from the public sector, waste management and agriculture.
