3. How to apply

You can make an application for small business rates relief at any time during the current financial year for relief in that year.

You can apply using the form below or call the Business Rates Team on 0161 474 5188. They'll be happy to offer you advice on whether or not you are eligible to claim.

If the rateable value of a property is altered and the property subsequently meets with the small business rate relief criteria, an application for such relief can be submitted up to 6 months after the date of notification of the alteration.

Remember: it's a criminal offence if you give false information when applying for small business rate relief.

The application form must be completed by the ratepayer or a person authorised to act on their behalf. This means if the ratepayer is:

  • a partnership, it must be completed by a partner of that partnership;
  • a trust, it must be completed by a trustee of that trust; or
  • a corporate organisation, it must be completed by the director of that organisation

In any other case, a person authorised to act on your behalf.

Backdating

From 1 October 2017 Ratepayers will only be able to backdate small business rate relief to 1 April 2012. This can be done by contacting the team or completing the form above.

The maximum period that we can backdate small business rate relief for at any time will be 6 years.
