Stockport short breaks offer
Universal and/or Local Offer
There are lots of clubs, activities, and opportunities available in Stockport that children with SEND can attend and take part in. You can find more information in the local offer directory.
There are some activities that are provided to specifically meet the needs of children with SEND as part of our Local Offer. Some of these can also be accessed directly without an assessment. For example, SEND swimming sessions. Some of these are provided by voluntary, community and other organisations and some are grant funded by the local authority.
Targeted children with disabilities short break activities
Some children will be unable to access universal opportunities through the Local Offer and need a targeted short break activity. These are either grant funded or commissioned group opportunities for children with learning and/or physical disabilities in addition to those with high level needs arising from neurodivergence. If a child or young person needs additional support to access these opportunities, such as personal care, this can also be put in place.
You'll need a Short Breaks assessment to access these opportunities.
Specialist children with disability short breaks
For other children, groups and activities may not be suitable and they'll need a more bespoke short break. This could be provided by employing a PA using Direct Payments or using an external agency to provide one-to-one support to take children and young people out into the community.
You'll need a Short Breaks assessment to access these opportunities.
If more support is required, this may need a social worker to assess the needs through a Child and Family Assessment.
Social care and/or overnight short break for children with disabilities
Children who need more support for them to thrive at home, need a Child and Family Assessment completed by a social worker. This includes children who need additional support to meet their needs in the family home due to their disability, such as with moving and handling or personal care.
Some children, who’s needs are very complex and where there is an assessed need around sleep, may need an overnight short break. This may be with a home from home foster carer or a residential provider. All children who have an overnight short break need a social worker for as long as they have this service.
