Overview

School Nursing is a health service for children and young people of school age. The service supports both children attending school, and children who are home schooled.

The School Nursing team is made up of:

  • School Nurses, who are qualified nurses with an additional specialist public health qualification
  • Community Staff Nurses, who are qualified general nurses, children’s nurses or mental health nurses working in the community under the direction of a School Nurse
  • School Nurse Family Help Assistants, who assist in the delivery of school age public health interventions
  • School Nurse Assistants, who are trained to deliver the National Child Measurement Programme

We work together with other services to deliver the Healthy Child Programme for 0 to 19 year olds. This is a nationally developed, evidence-based programme which aims to give every child the best possible start in life, and is designed to offer every child and family support in making healthy choices. You can find out more about what this includes in what we do.
