Becoming a governor
There are currently more than 150 school governor vacancies across schools in Stockport. We're constantly looking for people to join our school boards.
Who can become a school governor?
Anyone with an interest in education can be a governor. Governors are volunteers who work to further the school’s development.
What do governors get out of volunteering?
You can get a great deal from the work and time you put in as a governor. It gives you a chance to:
- make a difference to how well the school runs
- see how your efforts help raise standards
- do something positive for the next generation
- serve the local community
- help realise your own potential by learning new skills
The Head of Governor Services oversees the training programme for governors and trustee boards.
How much time is taken up by being a governor?
The time you devote can vary widely, depending on how involved you become and what needs doing. Being a governor involves more than just taking an interest, though this is a crucial part of the job.
The governing board usually meets at least once a term. You may also sit on a committee dealing with:
- curriculum, teaching and learning
- resources, including finance, staffing, premises and health and safety
A governor can also have responsibility for working alongside the school on areas such as special educational needs, safeguarding, diversity or a particular subject or department.
