Roadworks, closures and diversions

11. Torkington Park, Hazel Grove
Work has started on a Greater Manchester-wide programme to make journeys on foot or by bike much easier and more attractive.
Our work in Stockport includes measures to link communities in Hazel Grove by increasing walking and cycling use on off-road routes and local roads around Hazel Grove. As part of this, the west-east route across Torkington Park between Torkington Road, at the Torkington Centre from the existing signal controlled pedestrian and cyclist crossing, and Lingfield Avenue, past the play area, is being improved.
The route will be subject to localised widening and re-alignment for enhanced shared pedestrian and cyclist use, with a new section of path provided alongside the tennis courts. The existing steps adjacent to Torkington Centre will be removed and regraded, and a dropped kerb access provided for cyclists at the existing path connection to Lingfield Avenue. Lighting is being installed along the route which will be switched off between midnight and 5am. New cycle stands will be installed near the play area.

Work to begin these improvements will take place week starting 17 January 2022 for approximately 3 months. The paths will need to be closed in sections to make sure the works can be carried out safely and efficiently. Users of the park will be diverted locally with signs. Access to and through the park will be maintained at all times, however, the path to Lingfield Avenue will need to be closed for a short period whist resurfacing work is carried out. A diversion route will be signed.
A works compound area will be positioned in the car park off the A6 to securely store materials within a fenced-off area. A small number of construction vehicle movements will be required within the park, and these will always be carefully managed by the site team. The works will mainly take place Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 4pm, with weekend and evening working if needed.
