Station Road, Marple

Works around the upcoming Marple Community Hub

We're delivering a package of highway works in Marple to support travel by sustainable modes, in particular walking, cycling and public transport, which includes improved access to the community hub as well as the memorial park and central shopping area.

As part of this, a new crossing was completed on Station Road in 2025 between Hollins Lane and Manor Hill Road.

The following works are planned along Station Road from January 2026:

  • installation of a new puffin (signal controlled) crossing for pedestrians on Station Road between Winnington Road and St Martin's Road, adjacent to the canal at the top of Brabyns Brow. Also the widening of the footway on the northern side of Station Road, between the canal towpath and the new crossing
  • carriageway resurfacing on Station Road between Hollins Lane and Arkwright Road

The new Marple Community Hub is planned to open in autumn 2026. Find out more about the Marple Hub project.

Station Road: works from January 2026

Works to install the new crossing by the canal bridge are programmed to start the week beginning 12 January and will take approximately 10 weeks to complete. Traffic management will be in place to ensure that the works can be carried out safely and efficiently and will include for the provision of temporary traffic lights at the junction of Station Road and Winnington Road on weekdays from 9:30am to 3:00pm, for the duration of the works.

St Martin’s Road will be closed to vehicular traffic at the junction with Station Road for the duration of the works, with access to properties being maintained at all times via the junction with Oldknow Road at the southern end of St Martin’s Road, with appropriate diversion route signage provided. The closure will also enable the provision of a contractor welfare facility which will be used sensitively with respect to residents and removed as soon as possible.

Some footway closures will be required during the works, including the northern footway on Station Road, with signage provided to direct pedestrians to alternative safe routes.

Thank you in advance for your patience and co-operation with our teams on site, who will be seeking to minimise disruption in the area. The works will predominantly take place during the daytime, Monday to Friday, with evening and weekend working only if required.

Overnight resurfacing: works from March 2026

From Monday 9 March for approximately 6 nights, carriageway resurfacing and road marking works will be carried out on 2 sections of Station Road, one between Arkwright Road and Winnington Road encompassing the new crossing, and a second section from Hollins Lane to just east of the existing pedestrian refuge island, close to 105 Station Road.

A section of Station Road approximately between 105 Station Road and Winnington Road will not be resurfaced to allow for further drainage works associated with the Marple Community Hub development to take place. Resurfacing of this section will take place upon completion of these works. The works will require the closure of Station Road in both directions between Arkwright Road and Hollins Lane. The overnight closures will be in place between 7pm and midnight each night. Noisier activities will be undertaken as early as possible during each shift.

Diversion routes will be clearly signed and access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times. Footways may also need to be closed at times; pedestrians will be diverted locally with signage. Vehicle access to properties within the extents of the closure will be maintained as much as possible. This may be via one end of the closure or the other, and there may be a delay while the contractor makes the area safe for access.

We seek to minimise noise and disruption at all times. We are sorry for any inconvenience that may be caused and thank you for your ongoing co-operation.
