Roadworks, closures and diversions
3. St Mary’s Way improvements
St Mary’s Way is an important route in our town centre that we’re investing in improving for the future.
Widening the road and improving junctions will let more traffic use this key road. This will make it easier for motorists to travel along Hempshaw Lane and St Mary’s Way between the A6 and M60. At the same time, we are also improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
The work taking place is part of our Town Centre Access Plan project.
We’re doing all we can to keep disruption to a minimum. This includes:
• keeping the road and junctions open as much as possible
• planning the work around other projects in the town centre
• carrying out any required closures at night
You may need to leave more time for your journey and plan your route using the Transport for Greater Manchester online journey planner
What’s happening over the next few weeks?
We're in the final phases of works with the focus at the St Mary's Way / Hall Street junction. Traffic management will be required for the remainder of the works, however this will continue to be minimised wherever possible to reduce the impact of the works.
When we have finished the Hall Street / St Mary's Way roadworks, it will be the end of this large project to improve the capacity of the roads and will bring many benefits to Stockport and its people.
Update August 2018
The TCAP works to improve traffic flow and pedestrian/cycle facilities are in their final stages. A significant series of junction improvement and road widening works have been completed at and between the St Mary's Way junctions with Hempshaw Lane, Hall Street, Newbridge Lane and Portwood Roundabout.
From Monday 6 August 2018 for approximately 2 weeks (subject to weather conditions) works are scheduled to provide new expansion joints at Captains Bridge. These joints will allow the bridge to expand and contract in hot and cold weather without cracking the road surface or structure. These works couldn't be undertaken with the main bridge works as this was before the highway surfacing works took place.
The works are happening overnight to minimise their impact as much as possible. The working hours will be 8pm to 5am, Monday to Friday. St Mary's Way and Newbridge Lane will stay open, however traffic management will be required so works can be carried out safely and efficiently. This will include footway and carriageway lane closures on St Mary's Way. There will be alternative pedestrian routes signed on site.
