Roadworks, closures and diversions
3. St Mary’s Way improvements
St Mary’s Way is an important route in our town centre that we’re investing in improving for the future.
Widening the road and improving junctions will let more traffic use this key road. This will make it easier for motorists to travel along Hempshaw Lane and St Mary’s Way between the A6 and M60. At the same time, we are also improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
The work taking place is part of our Town Centre Access Plan project.
We’re doing all we can to keep disruption to a minimum. This includes:
• keeping the road and junctions open as much as possible
• planning the work around other projects in the town centre
• carrying out any required closures at night
You may need to leave more time for your journey and plan your route using the Transport for Greater Manchester online journey planner
What’s happening over the next few weeks?
We're in the final phases of works with the focus at the St Mary's Way / Hall Street junction. Traffic management will be required for the remainder of the works, however this will continue to be minimised wherever possible to reduce the impact of the works.
When we have finished the Hall Street / St Mary's Way roadworks, it will be the end of this large project to improve the capacity of the roads and will bring many benefits to Stockport and its people.
Update 12 April 2018
Significant progress has been made at the St Mary's Way / Hall Street junction with new left turn filter lanes open and works to the central island, kerb lines and footways well advanced.
From Monday 16 April 2018 for approximately 2 weeks, there is a requirement to close St Mary's Way (between Portwood Roundabout and Hall Street) and Spring Gardens (between Waterloo Road and St Mary's Way) overnight, 8pm to 5:30am Monday to Friday. This is primarily to enable carriageway resurfacing to take place, however, the closure will also be utilised to undertake St Mary's Way pedestrian island works.
Newbridge Lane will remain open at all times, as well as St Mary's Way in a northbound direction from Newbridge Lane to Portwood Roundabout. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation during the overnight works to maintain access in both directions between Hall Street and St Mary's Way (south of the junction, to/from the A6).
Signed diversions will be in place and emergency vehicle access maintained at all times. Works will continue throughout the day but with no restricted movements. Pedestrian diversion routes will also be signed as required throughout the works.
Following the resurfacing works, the traffic signals at the St Mary's Way / Hall Street junction are scheduled to be commissioned by Transport for Greater Manchester week commencing 30 April 2018. This will require the use of temporary traffic lights while the permanent traffic lights are replaced.
