Roadworks, closures and diversions

9. School Streets trial

School Streets consultation

You can give us your views on our consultation website.

Access to some roads around the schools will be closed to general and school traffic as school street trials take place at 7 schools in the borough. The trials are being funded by Transport for Greater Manchester.

Roads will only be closed for short periods at the start and end of the school day and only when the road signs and cones are in place.

Residents and essential visitors, such as care workers, can still use the roads but need to show a permit provided by Stockport Council or, where applicable, their NHS staff pass. Blue Badge holders will also be given access to get into the school. Emergency vehicles will, of course, be given automatic access.

All other traffic will be turned back by volunteer marshal who will be obvious in high-visibility clothing and will manage the road closures using road closed signs and cones.

The times of the road closures have been identified in conjunction with each school. Each of the roads listed are subject to an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order for the period of the trial which ends at the end of July 2022 to coincide with the start of the school summer holidays.

Further consultation will take place during and after the trial to capture the impact of the closures and the potential for a permanent scheme.
