Roadworks, closures and diversions
7. Marketplace and Underbanks
TCAP is developing a public realm improvement scheme for Lower Hillgate and Little Underbank including new street furniture, paving upgrades and road reconstruction.
Trial holes were dug during October and December to facilitate an inspection of the existing road construction, including the location and identification of the underground services. These holes were backfilled with a temporary surface until the main works commence.
The first phase of works to enhance the roads and accessibility is planned to start on the week commencing 24 February for approximately 8 weeks. In recognition of the urgent need to repair the existing failures, this will involve excavating and resurfacing the road between the automatic bollards and Royal Oak Yard. Localised pavement repairs will also be undertaken and street furniture will be re-painted. The main roadworks will take approximately 5 weeks.
A temporary, flexible road surface material (tarmac) will be laid. This is being used in consideration of the existing failures and upcoming redevelopments adjacent to this section that requires localised excavations.
The works will be undertaken between 10.30am and 4pm and the road re-opened to vehicles each evening. Please ensure all vehicles are removed from the area before 10.30am.
Pedestrian and emergency service access will be maintained at all times.
A detailed, subsequent programme of works is being developed in liaison with the contractor, utility companies and the council's regeneration team to co-ordinate our highway works with the planned redevelopment of buildings.
Full reconstruction and paving between Royal Oak Yard and the roundabout at the bottom of Little Underbank is planned later in the year. Design activities are ongoing and we'll provide more information on this when it's available. It is then planned to revisit the area between the automatic bollards and Royal Oak Yard with full reconstruction and paving following the adjacent redevelopment of buildings.
