Roadworks, closures and diversions

4. King Street West

As part of our Town Centre Access Plan project we're introducing a new one way system around Kingston Street and King Street West between Wood Street and Chestergate. This will include highway widening and re-alignment works and changes to junctions. Facilities for pedestrians and cyclists are also being enhanced.

You can view the Scheme 303 drawing for detailed information.

The works are underway and require traffic management to ensure the safety of operatives and road users.

As part of the traffic management, the traffic signals have been switched off at King Street West/Chestergate until the work has finished. The following movements are now prohibited:

  • the right turn from Chestergate to King Street West (northbound)
  • straight ahead from Chestergate towards the bus depot

Information about traffic management at the junction and across the town centre

With the progression of the works, the Trans Penine Trail route along the A560 Chestergate and through the town centre is subject to a diversion between NCN62 and M60 Junction 1 and Tiviot Dale. Appropriate signage is in place to guide Trans Penine Trail users along the diversion. The diversion comprises the riverside path between NCN62 and Heaton Lane. We've recently cut back the vegetation along the riverside path to ensure it's suitable for increased use.

The works are expected to be completed in Autumn 2018.

Visit our Town Centre Access Plan (TCAP) page for information about traffic management currently as the junction and across the town centre.
