8. Councillor Lane, Cheadle Hulme
Work has started on a Greater Manchester wide programme, Greater Manchester Mayor’s Cycling and Walking Challenge Fund (MCF), to make journeys on foot or by bike much easier and more attractive. You can find more information on our cycling and walking in Stockport pages.
In autumn 2019, we consulted on proposals for the Cheadle Hulme Crossings Package. This comprised of 4 new signalised crossings for cyclists and pedestrians across busy roads to connect quiet routes to the recently constructed Cycle City Ambition Grant 2 (CCAG2) scheme in the Ladybrook Valley.
3 of the 4 crossings were supported at consultation. They were approved by local councillors and have had funding allocated by Greater Manchester Mayor’s Cycling and Walking Challenge Fund (MCF) for delivery.
One element of the Cheadle Hulme Crossings Package is to upgrade the existing pedestrian crossing on Councillor Lane, near its junction with Tarvin Road. This is to provide a sparrow crossing which will allow cyclists and pedestrians to cross at the same time but separately.
A 2-way segregated cycle track will enable cyclists to access the cycle part of the crossing from Tarvin Road and from the shopping parade on Councillor Lane.
A raised table will be introduced on Tarvin Road at its junction with Councillor Lane to provide level access. The corners will be tightened to shorten the crossing distance and lower the speed at which vehicles make turning manoeuvres.
The fencing on the south side of Councillor Lane will be replaced with a variation in the alignment to accommodate the crossing, widened footway and cycleway and soft landscaping. New access gates will be provided along this fence line.
2 parking bays will be relocated to the eastern end of the row in the shopping parade to accommodate the cycleway and grass verge.
To accommodate the wider upgraded crossing, the bus stop will be moved slightly to the southeast and the footpath leading to the shopping parade on Councillor Lane will be realigned. A new bus shelter will be installed.
You can view the scheme drawing.
Works have started to upgrade the crossing on Councillor Lane near Tarvin Road and are scheduled until mid-March.
2-way traffic on Councillor Lane and access to/from Tarvin Road will be maintained, but some traffic management will be required at times to ensure the works can be carried out safely and efficiently. This will include:
- temporary traffic lights on Councillor Lane, operational during working hours only
- traffic from Tarvin Road will be made one-way from Councillor Lane to Nantwich Close for the duration of the works. Motorists can use the junction to the east to join Councillor Lane from Tarvin Road
- the bus stop next to the crossing will be closed. You can check the bus stop or contact the operator for information on changes to services
- local diversions for pedestrians with associated signage clearly displayed
The existing crossing has been decommissioned and a temporary crossing will be provided until the upgraded crossing is in use.
The main working hours will be Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm but some weekend and evening working may be necessary. The contractors working on behalf of the council will make every attempt to minimise noise and disruption at all times.
The impact of the traffic management will be under continual review and the traffic management requirements may be subject to change by unforeseen circumstances on site. We'll write to you if there are significant changes to the works and up to date information will be provided on this page.
Carriageway resurfacing is scheduled to be undertaken towards the end of the works. We'll provide more information in advance.
