Carrington Road: pedestrian crossing upgrade
We're delivering a package of highway works to support travel by sustainable modes, in particular walking, cycling and public transport, and to improve road safety along the 330-bus route / A560 corridor.
The works include:
- an upgrade of the signal-controlled crossing on Carrington Road
- a new raised table on Werneth Street at its junction with Carrington Road
- improvements to the existing bus stops including a relocation of the eastbound stop
- footway improvements

Update, October 2026
The works on Carrington Road are entering their final stages. They continue to be carefully planned and co-ordinated to manage disruption as much as possible. The working hours are generally between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.
Traffic management is needed to make sure the works can be carried out safely and efficiently. Carrington Road has now re-opened in both directions, with temporary signals in place.
From Monday 12 October for approximately 5 nights, carriageway resurfacing and road marking works will be carried out on Carrington Road between its junctions with Charlotte Street and New Bridge Lane. Carrington Road will need to be closed in both directions between 7pm and midnight each night. Noisier activities will be undertaken as early as possible.
Diversion routes will be clearly signed and access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.
Vehicle access to properties within the extents of the closure will be maintained as much as possible. This may be via one end of the closure or the other, and there may be a delay while the area is made safe for access. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
Due to other works in the town centre which are expected to be completed at the end of November, buses will remain on their current diversion via New Bridge Lane on a 24/7 basis, so the stops on Carrington Road remain out of use. The closest available stops to Carrington Road are on New Bridge Lane or Stockport Road West. More information about bus diversions is provided at bus stops and on the Bee Network website.
We continue to take measures to minimise noise and disruption at all times; however, we're sorry for any inconvenience that may be caused and thank you for your ongoing co-operation.
We're working with TfGM, who manage traffic signals across the region, to have the new crossing operational as soon as possible following the resurfacing and markings.
These works are weather dependant and may be subject to change at short notice. Up-to-date information will be provided on this page.
A site compound will be required to facilitate the works. This will be at the south end of Crescent Road. This will be used sensitively with respect to residents and will be removed as soon as possible.
