Bramhall Lane highway improvements

Our Bus Pinch Points programme is improving bus facilities and access to bus stops.

We have a scheme at Bramhall Lane which aims to support sustainable travel choices and improve safety, while maintaining and managing the performance of the existing transport network along this key corridor.

The scheme has been developed in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and is being delivered under the Government’s City Regional Transport Settlement (CRSTS) and Transforming Cities Fund. These are national investment funds to improve local transport networks, access for local businesses and organisations, and to help residents get to amenities in their communities. This Bus Pinch Points element of the fund is allocated to schemes that reduce bus travel time and improve safety for bus users, in this case by providing a crossing to improve access to bus stops.

This Bramhall Lane scheme was supported during our public consultation in 2023 and was recommended for approval at Central Stockport Area Committee that June. Visit our democracy webpages to find out more about the approval of the Bramhall Lane scheme.

The associated Traffic Regulation Orders (including waiting restrictions) were then advertised, and these were recommended for approval in March last year. Visit our democracy webpages to find out more about the approval of the Traffic Regulation Orders.

Our Full Business Case has since been approved, which required a demonstration of value for money. You can find more background about the development and funding of the scheme via the links to our democracy webpages above.

The works include:

  • the installation of a new toucan (signal controlled) crossing on Bramhall Lane for pedestrians and cyclists, at Beech Road / Hallam Park, with a slight relocation of the existing southbound bus stop and the introduction of one-way on Beech Road (away from Bramhall Lane)

  • amending the access gates to the play area within Hallam Park and provision of a circular path feature between the Bramhall Lane entrance to the park and the play area

  • tightening of the side road of Cale Green at the junction with Bramhall Lane, with a footway buildout to shorten the crossing distance and slow the speed of vehicles

  • adding supplementary waiting restrictions

Works start the week of 20 January and will take around 3 months to complete. They will be done in localised phases, and will be planned and co-ordinated to manage disruption as much as possible.

The works have also been planned mindful of and in co-ordination with with Network Rail’s Greek Street Bridge Replacement works. We're aiming to complete the main works along Bramhall Lane before the main Greek Street Bridge works start. We anticipated that the footway build out at Cale Green / Bramhall Lane will need to be undertaken at a later date to accommodate the Network Rail works.

Traffic management will be used so the works can be carried out safely and efficiently, this will include temporary lights on Bramhall Lane from 9am to 4pm.

Beech Road will be closed in both directions at the junction with Bramhall Lane from the start of the works. It will open to one-way traffic from Bramhall Lane before the No Entry is introduced from Heath Road. The access arrangements for Heath Road will be clearly signed and access to properties will be maintained at all times.

Some footway closures will be required and pedestrians will be diverted with signage. Access through the park will be maintained. The bus stop by the park on Bramhall Lane will also need to be closed during the works. Please see the bus stop for information about services.

We anticipate that the play area within Hallam Park will need to be closed for a 2-week period to accommodate the changes to the gates and access path. Notices will be provided within the park in advance to advise of the dates for the temporary closure.

Thank you in advance for your patience and co-operation with our teams on site, who will be seeking to minimise disruption in the area.

The works will predominantly take place during the daytime, Monday to Friday, with evening and weekend working only if required.

Resurfacing works will be carried out overnight towards the end of the works.

A site compound will be required to facilitate the works, which will be on Beech Road. It will be used sensitively with respect to residents and removed as soon as possible.
