Roadworks, closures and diversions

9. Ashfield Road, Cheadle

In November 2020 we consulted on proposals to develop a segregated cycle route along Ashfield Road, linking Whitegates Road and Massie Street car park.

This forms part of a package of projects known as the Cheadle Towns Fund. This aims to:

  • improve connectivity within and to Cheadle
  • support clean growth
  • support enterprise on the high street

You can find more information about the Cheadle Towns Fund on our web page.

Scheme

As part of the works we're reconstructing the footpaths on Ashfield Road and providing a 3m wide segregated cycle track through the existing road closure. To help pedestrians and cyclists to move safely from the footpath / new cycle track along Ashfield Road the angled parking bays will be removed and replaced by parallel parking bays. A new footpath will be provided alongside the new parking bays and a turning space will be provided at the southern end of the bays.

To help with the scheme, we'll be cutting back the overgrown vegetation to the fence boundaries on the western side of Ashfield Road, adjacent to the rear gardens of several properties on Brooklyn Crescent.

3 trees will have their lower branches removed to allow sufficient height clearance, and dead wood will be removed from a further 2 trees. A number of young trees located within the existing closure will also be removed due to their poor condition. Several new trees are planned to be planted as part of the scheme, within junctions. Appropriate measures will be taken with respect to any nesting birds.

Construction

The works are planned to take place from 16 August 2021 for approximately 4 months.

Access to properties will be maintained at all times, however, traffic management will be required to make sure the works can be carried out safely and efficiently. This will include temporary traffic lights when work is carried out on the road and surfacing takes place at the junction of Whitegates Road / Ashfield Road.

We kindly request that Ashfield Road, near Cheadle Library, is left clear of parked vehicles for the duration of the works. The 7 parking bays in front of Cheadle Library will be temporarily unavailable but access to the car park will be maintained.

The works will mainly take place Monday to Friday, from 7:30am to 4pm with weekend and evening working if required.

The impact of the traffic management will be under continual review, and the traffic management requirements may be subject to change by unforeseen circumstances on site. Up-to-date information about the works will be provided on this page.
