Active Travel Fund Tranche 4: Romiley works

Works have been taking place to make getting to and around Romiley easier and safer by walking, wheeling and cycling.

Funding was confirmed for the delivery of our Active Travel Fund Tranche 4 (ATF4) Romiley project.

Overview of works

We're working with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to deliver a network of fully inclusive routes to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer, more attractive and universally accessible for all. This project includes the delivery of the following measures which you may recall were consulted and approved under our Romiley District Centre, Romiley Crossings and Romiley to Stockport packages.

The measures are primarily to connect local residential, employment, education, retail and leisure destinations across Romiley. They also support existing routes to schools with new crossings and wider accessibility improvements. These include:

  • a new crossing on Stockport Road near Green Lane
  • pedestrian improvements at the crossing near the station
  • upgraded crossing on Compstall Road at Romiley Precinct
  • a new crossing on Compstall Road near Birch Avenue / park access
  • a new crossing on Hatherlow near Hurstheads Lane
  • a walking and cycling route along quieter, residential roads between Romiley Precinct and Bredbury Green, including junction and footway improvements, and supported by the above crossings
  • new 20mph speed limits and the closures to motor vehicles of Green Lane (at the canal bridge) and Hurstheads Lane

All works are now substantially complete and we thank the local community for your patience and co-operation.

Hole House Fold: works in May 2026

Further to the introduction of a new crossing on Stockport Road near Green Lane and Life Leisure, and widening of the footway on Hole House Fold through reconstruction of the stone wall, associated kerbing and drainage works are planned to take place on Hole House Fold during the week of 25 May 2026. Further to some issues being identified upon starting the works, they're now expected to be completed by Wednesday 3 June at the latest.

These works have been arranged during half term to manage disruption, mindful of the traffic management required to enable the works to be carried out safely and efficiently.

The working hours will generally be between 7:30am and 5pm, with evening and weekend working only if required. Temporary lights will be needed at the junction of Stockport Road / Hole House Fold. Their impact will be closely monitored with the timings adjusted as necessary. These will generally need to remain in place on a 24/7 basis, but we always aim to remove traffic management when safe and appropriate to do so.

Access will be maintained to properties at all times. Large vehicle access will be restricted at times and may be subject to some delay while safe access can be provided. Some footway closures will be required with pedestrians guided around the works.

The bus stop on Stockport Road towards Romiley will need to be closed during the works. We're working with TfGM to provide a temporary stop near the Methodist Church. Information will be provided on the stop and Bee Network website.

A site compound is required to facilitate the works. This will be in Life Leisure car park which will remain open and used sensitively with respect to other users and residents.
