Active Travel Fund Tranche 4: Romiley works
Works have been taking place to encourage active travel in the Romiley area.
Funding was confirmed for the delivery of our Active Travel Fund Tranche 4 (ATF4) Romiley project.
Overview of works
We're working with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to deliver a network of fully inclusive routes to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer, more attractive and universally accessible for all. This project includes the delivery of the following measures which you may recall were consulted and approved under our Romiley District Centre, Romiley Crossings and Romiley to Stockport packages.
The measures are primarily to connect local residential, employment, education, retail and leisure destinations across Romiley. They also support existing routes to schools with new crossings and wider accessibility improvements. These include:
- a new crossing on Stockport Road near Green Lane: works complete
- pedestrian improvements at the crossing near the station: works complete
- upgraded crossing on Compstall Road at Romiley Precinct: works largely complete
- a new crossing on Compstall Road near Birch Avenue / park access: works complete
- a new crossing on Hatherlow near Hurstheads Lane: works complete
- a walking and cycling route along quieter, residential roads between Romiley Precinct and Bredbury Green, including junction and footway improvements, and supported by the above crossings: works complete
- new 20mph speed limits and the closures to motor vehicles of Green Lane (at the canal bridge) and Hurstheads Lane: works complete
You can find a map-based overview of the plan here.

More details are provided in our July 2024 report to Werneth Area Committee.
All works are expected to be completed in spring 2026. In recognition of various local constraints, the works are being planned and phased to manage all forms of disruption as much as possible.
Our wider programme is being carefully developed in discussion with our design team and contractor, George Cox & Sons, with consideration of third-party requirements such as utilities companies.
Some of our designs have developed from those consulted to align with the ATF4 funding criteria. The delivery of some other elements that were consulted at the time are subject to future funding. Specifically, onward connections between Romiley centre and Cherry Tree, and Bredbury Green to Stockport do not have funding to be delivered at this time, but funding will be sought in future grant applications and they would be subject to further development and consultation as required.
Romiley Precinct
Thank you for your continued patience and co-operation as we enter the final phases of construction works under our project to make getting to and around Romiley safer for all.
Our works are mostly complete to upgrade the crossing in Romiley Precinct for pedestrian and cyclist use, with cycle track connections to Oakwood Road and Central Drive where onward cycling is in the carriageway along quieter, residential road routes.
The new crossing was switched on in early March 2026. We have some minor works to complete in the area over the following weeks.
As part of the scheme, Central Drive has become one-way to motor vehicles, running from the main road into the estate. Raised tables have been introduced across the side roads of Oakwood Road, Central Drive and Beechwood Avenue to create level crossings for pedestrians and slow the speed of turning vehicles. Note there is no change to the Compstall Road / Sandy Lane junction as part of this project.
The project has delivered a package of walking and cycling measures across Romiley connecting to local amenities and the wider expanding Bee Network sustainable transport system.
Further information about this, including how the proposals were developed and agreed can be found in the July 2024 report to Werneth Area Committee. You can find the scheme drawing below.
