Active Travel Fund Tranche 4: Romiley works
Works have started on our project to encourage active travel in the Romiley area.
Funding has been confirmed for the delivery of our Active Travel Fund Tranche 4 (ATF4) Romiley project.
Overview of works
We are working with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to deliver a network of fully inclusive routes to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer, more attractive and universally accessible for all. This project will include the delivery of the following measures which you may recall were consulted and approved under our Romiley District Centre, Romiley Crossings and Romiley to Stockport packages.
The measures are primarily to connect local residential, employment, education, retail and leisure destinations across Romiley. They also support existing routes to schools with new crossings and wider accessibility improvements. These include:
- a new crossing on Stockport Road near Green Lane: spring 2025, see details below
- pedestrian improvements at the crossing near the station: works complete
- upgraded crossing on Compstall Road at Romiley Precinct: works planned for summer 2025
- a new crossing on Compstall Road near Birch Avenue / park access: works complete
- a new crossing on Hatherlow near Hurstheads Lane: works complete
- a walking and cycling route along quieter, residential roads between Romiley Precinct and Bredbury Green, including junction and footway improvements, and supported by the above crossings: works complete
- new 20mph speed limits and the closures to motor vehicles of Green Lane (at the canal bridge) and Hurstheads Lane: works complete
See an map-based overview of the plan here.

All works are expected to be completed in autumn 2025. In recognition of various local constraints, the works are being planned and phased to manage all forms of disruption as much as possible.
Our wider programme is being carefully developed in discussion with our design team and contractor, George Cox & Sons, with consideration of third-party requirements such as utilities companies.
Some of our designs have developed from those consulted to align with the ATF4 funding criteria. The delivery of some other elements that were consulted at the time are subject to future funding. Specifically, onward connections between Romiley centre and Cherry Tree, and Bredbury Green to Stockport do not have funding to be delivered at this time, but funding will be sought in future grant applications and they would be subject to further development and consultation as required.
Hatherlow and Green Lane
Our first phases of works have included construction of a new toucan crossing on Hatherlow. This is a traffic light-based controlled crossing shared by pedestrians and cyclists.
The scheme has also included the closure of Hurstheads Lane at Hatherlow and Green Lane at the canal bridge. This has created segregated pedestrian and cyclist facilities in support of a wider route, making walking and cycling between Romiley Precinct and Bredbury Green much safer and more attractive.
New Crossing on Compstall Road
Works were completed in April to install a new signal-controlled crossing for pedestrians and cyclists on Compstall Road, by the rear access to Romiley Park.
The new crossing replaces the previous uncontrolled crossing island at what is recognised to be a key location, to improve access to the park and on a route to Romiley Primary.
New Crossing on Stockport Road, works from May 2025
Works to install a new signal-controlled crossing for pedestrians and cyclists on Stockport Road near Green Lane will start in early May. This is recognised to be a key location for a crossing to improve the safety and accessibility for walking and cycling between residential areas, local shops, the leisure centre and wider routes. The new crossing will be supplemented by other pedestrian improvements in the area.
The works will be carried out in phases to manage disruption as much as possible. The working hours will generally be between 7:30am and 4:30pm, Monday to Friday, with evening and weekend working only if required.
The works will take approximately 12 weeks to complete, with the main works from 6 May and some advanced works completed the week before.
This has been co-ordinated with:
- completion of the new crossing which has been installed near Romiley Park
- unrelated electricity upgrade works which were carried out near Sandy Lane over Easter
- emergency works by United Utilities at the Barrack Hill/Gorsey Brow/Hatherlow/Bredbury Green junction in the week starting 28 April
We'll be working hard to keep traffic moving, but traffic management is required on a 24/7 basis so the works can be completed safely and efficiently. This includes the use of temporary 3 way traffic lights, the impact of which will be closely monitored and the timings adjusted as necessary.
Roads will remain open and access will be maintained to all properties. We'll discuss with residents and businesses where works are needing to take place across accesses, to minimise the disruption of this.
For safety reasons, there will be a need for some temporary closures of the parking bay along Green Lane, opposite St David’s Avenue. This includes for approximately 2 weeks from 6 May. During these periods, permits for this bay will be honoured in Dye Lane car park, or permit holders are advised to use the unrestricted parking on surrounding streets.
Footways will need to be closed at times during the works, pedestrians will be diverted locally with signage. Pedestrian access to the war memorial will be maintained around VE Day.
The bus stops on Stockport Road will need to be closed during the works, temporary stops are being provided near the Methodist Church.
A site compound will be required to facilitate the works. This will be located within The Wharf car park, which will remain open with a reduced capacity. We'll also require the use of some of the parking bay on Green Lane opposite St David’s Avenue. These areas will be used sensitively with respect to users of The Wharf car park, local residents and businesses, and removed as soon as possible.
Resurfacing works will be carried out at night towards the end of the works. More information about this will be provided in advance.
Walking and cycling route
The project includes an improved walking and cycling route along quieter, residential roads between Romiley Precinct and Bredbury Green. This includes footway improvements and the protection of junctions from inappropriate parking. Cycling will be in the carriageway. Junctions are being tightened to shorten crossing distances and slow the speed of vehicles. The route also includes new 20mph speed limits and is supported by new/upgraded crossings over main roads.
The main works were substantially completed at the end of March 2025.
