Active Travel Fund Tranche 4: Ladybrook Valley

Construction of the next phases of the Ladybrook Valley path is about to start.

The scheme is part of our work with TfGM (Travel for Greater Manchester) and Active Travel England. The aim of the scheme is to further unlock the health and environmental benefits of active travel. We're delivering a network of fully inclusive routes to make walk, wheel and cycle journeys safer and more attractive, and universally accessible for all.

Our works at Ladybrook Valley will involve an upgrade of the walking route along the river between Bramhall Park Road and Ladybridge Road for shared pedestrian and cyclist use. This is to provide a missing link in a route between Hazel Grove and Cheadle, with spurs and connections to local destinations and the wider active travel network.

Funding for delivery was confirmed at the end of June 2024 following submission of our Full Business Case via the Government’s Active Travel programme. You can find more details about this in our news article about Stockport's eco-friendly travel improvements.

We have since been in the process of finalising the detailed designs and arranging the works with our contractor.

Please be assured all works are being carefully planned and co-ordinated to manage disruption within the local community as much as possible. The works along Ladybrook Valley between Bramhall Park Road and Ladybridge Road are being planned for 2025, and we will communicate details of this work in advance.

Detailed design is ongoing for this section. It includes liaison with third parties as well as our Neighbourhoods team, and ecology and arboriculture specialists.

A walking and cycling directional signage strategy is being developed for the wider area. Directional signage will be delivered towards the end of the works, in accordance with the wider strategy.

Sandringham Road Connection

The first works from the week of 11 November to early 2025 involve an upgrade of the shared use path between Sandringham Road and Twining Brook Road on the other side of Micker Brook. This will include widening, resurfacing and additional lighting.

The chicane barrier at the end of Sandringham Road will also be replaced by a row of bollards. This will allow full access for pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair users and pushchairs while preventing unauthorised vehicle access.

This was supported during our public consultation in autumn 2023. The consultation report was subsequently reported to Local Members at Cheadle Area Committee and the proposals were approved by the Cabinet Member.

The path will need to be closed for the duration of the works, and a signed diversion will be in place. Access to the field will be maintained from Sandringham Road and Crossfield Road (passage). Access will also be maintained over the bridge to/from Twining Brook Road, except for a period of approximately one week when works are taking place to the adjacent section of path. We'll provide up-to-date information on this webpage.

The works will generally be on weekdays between 7:30am and 5:30pm, with evening and weekend working if required.

A site access and compound area will be required at the end of Sandringham Road. This will be used sensitively with respect to local residents, and will be removed as soon as possible. Residents are asked to please park with consideration of the increased usage of Sandringham Road by construction traffic during the works.
