A6 crossing, Stockport Interchange
There will be construction works to install a new traffic light controlled crossing for pedestrians and cyclists on the A6, providing an improved link between Stockport Town Centre (via Hooper Street) and Stockport Interchange and the Viaduct Park.
These work will start on Wednesday January 8. They're planned to be completed in March 2025, ahead of the closure of the Greek Street roundabout for Network Rail’s replacement of the Greek Street bridge over the West Coast Main Line.
Background
The new pedestrian and cycle crossing will complement the new Stockport Interchange. It will be located on the A6 viaduct over Daw Bank, between the southern entrance to the Viaduct Park and the Hat Works museum.
The scheme will add to the recently completed walking and cycling improvements at Stockport Interchange to the A6, and the improved connections from St Peter’s Square to the Market and Underbanks to the east of the A6.
In addition to the installation of the new crossing, the works will also involve:
- widening of the footways on the A6 to accommodate a shared footway/cycleway, linking to the southern Viaduct Park entrance on the west and Hooper Street on the east
- the addition of a railing to increase the height of the A6 viaduct parapet to allow for cyclists on the new sections of footway/cycleway
- the removal of the northbound bus stop outside Universal DB, which was required on a temporary basis during the construction of Stockport Interchange
Construction works
The works have been carefully planned to minimise disruption to users of the A6, local businesses and residents. Access to adjacent properties and Viaduct Park will be maintained at all times during the works. The majority of the works will be carried out while maintaining two-way traffic on the A6. To do this, the traffic lanes on the A6 will be temporarily narrowed to create safe working room.
Please also be aware that to allow the safe installation of the railing on the A6 Viaduct, Daw Bank will be closed to traffic in both direction between the Exchange Street and Mersey Square junction for a 2 week period in March 2025. We'll provide an update when the exact dates of the closure have been confirmed.
We've been liaising with Transport for Greater Manchester in planning the works to make sure that diversions are in place for bus services on the A6 and Daw Bank during the closures.
Second phase
We're moving into the second phase of the works on the eastern (Mersey Square) side of the A6 which will require a change to the traffic management arrangements. Again, narrow lanes will be installed on the A6 to create safe working room for the works whilst maintaining two-way traffic on the A6. To install the new traffic management arrangement, the A6 will be closed to through traffic in both directions between Exchange Street and Heaton Lane overnight, for one night only, from 7:30pm on Thursday 13 February to 5am on Friday 14 February.
Signed diversion routes will be in place during the closure. The Heaton Lane bus gate will remain in operation during the closure, with southbound traffic on the A6 diverted traffic signed to turn down the Travis Brow Link Road and onto King Street West.
Following this, 2 further overnight closures of the same section of the A6 will be required to allow the installation of equipment for the new traffic lights on the following dates:
- 7:30pm on Saturday 22 February to 5am on Sunday 23 February
- 7:30pm on Sunday 23 February to 5am on Monday 24 February
The works have been carefully planned to minimise disruption to users of the A6 and local businesses and residents. The noisiest activities will be undertaken as early as possible in the shift to minimise disturbance to adjacent properties.
