A34 Corridor Improvement Plan

We're delivering a series of measures to enhance walking and cycling connectivity, ease congestion at key locations and unlock growth potential along the A34 corridor between the M60 and A555.

The project includes an improved walk, wheel and cycle route with segregated facilities and safer crossings connecting to the wider and expanding Bee Network. The Bee Network is Greater Manchester’s vision for a more ‘joined up’, sustainable and accessible transport system, including for those walking, wheeling or cycling.

The project also includes a series of junction layout changes to improve traffic flows.

Detailed information about the measures being implemented is on our A34 Corridor Improvement Plan project webpage.

Construction is taking place between 2024 and 2028. The works are being delivered in phases planned and co-ordinated to manage disruption as much as possible. We thank the local community and all users of the A34 corridor in advance for their patience and co-operation.

An indicative delivery programme is shown on our project webpage.

We're carefully planning all works with our design and contractor teams to manage disruption as much as possible. More details about how we're doing so is on our project webpage, and in our A34 Corridor Improvement Plan FAQs.

Details of works on the A34 itself will be clearly communicated in advance.

A34 vegetation works, February 2026

We have some vegetation works arranged from early February, in advance of our main scheme works on the A34 which are planned for 2026, and in consideration of ecological constraints – in particular to be in advance of the bird nesting season where necessary.

Cheadle Royal to Kingsway School

We have a scheme to introduce a segregated cycleway and pedestrian footway on the west side of the A34 between Cheadle Royal and Kingsway School, connecting to wider sustainable travel routes and improvements in the area. The scheme retains 2 general traffic lanes in each direction. Detailed design is ongoing with a view of the main works taking place this summer.

To enable the main works, we will be cutting back vegetation to the back of the footways – this will be done on both sides of the A34 as there will be periods during the main works on the west side that we will need to close the footway, with a pedestrian/cyclist diversion on the east side. The cut-back includes some tree pruning and the removal of any vegetation to a suitable height above the footway.

These vegetation works are planned to commence on Monday 2 February and will require off-peak lane closures (9am to 3pm) so they can be carried out safely and efficiently. The footways will also be closed in sections, with a safe route provided and clearly signed around the works.

The works will commence on the west, northbound side of the A34 in the Cheadle Royal area, generally working northwards for approximately two-weeks to Kingsway School. The cut-back will then be completed on the east, southbound side for approximately one week. The traffic management will be as compact as possible whilst enabling the ongoing work to be carried out safely – the extents of the lane closures will move with the works.

Eden Park Roundabout

We have a scheme at the A34/Eden Park Road roundabout to improve highway network resilience, provide pedestrian and cyclist crossings over the A34 and access to the west for all road users. We're planning to commence the main works in the coming months.

We'll be removing trees and vegetation to enable the main works to be carried out – this is largely along the west, northbound side of the junction (on the opposite side from Eden Park Road) including the roundabout approach and exit which is an area that will become carriageway by the widening. There are also smaller sections of clearance to be carried out in the middle of the roundabout (as part of the main works) and on the corners of Eden Park Road.

There is a landscaping plan for the scheme which includes grass and wildflower seeding, shrub, hedge and bulb planting, and trees of appropriate species – as well as bird, bat and insect boxes.

The vegetation clearance works are planned to be carried out on the corners of Eden Park Road on Wednesday 11 to Friday 13 February. These works will require off-peak lane closures (9:30am to 3:30pm) on the A34 southbound.

The vegetation clearance works on the west side of the junction are planned to commence on Monday 16 February for approximately 2 weeks. These works will require off-peak lane closures (9:30am to 3:30pm) on the A34 northbound.

As above, the lane closures will be set up as compact as possible while enabling the ongoing work to be carried out safely.

It's not anticipated that there will be lane closures in the same direction at Cheadle Royal/Kingsway and Eden Park at the same time.

The precise dates of these vegetation works may be subject to some change. Up-to-date information will be provided on this page. Information about the main works will also be provided on this page in advance.

Stanley Road to Bruntwood Park (via Eden Park): new crossing on Etchells Road, works from September 2025

The project includes improvements to an active travel route between Stanley Road and Bruntwood Park. This is mainly off-road and includes widening, improved surfacing and lighting, as well as new crossings at Eden Park Road and Etchells Road.

Works are complete along Bruntwood Lane between Three Acres Lane/Eden Park Road and Bruntwood Park.

The route includes the construction of a new signal controlled ‘Sparrow’ crossing at a key location on Etchells Road by Bruntwood Lane/Emmanuel Church. At Sparrow Crossings, pedestrians and cyclists cross the road at the same time but are kept separate from each other to maximise safety and ease of use. Cycle tracks will connect to Bruntwood Lane, where onward cycling is in the carriageway, and along Etchells Road on the north side, over the A34 bridge to the path connecting to Sainsbury's.

Update December 2025

These works are now substantially complete, and the crossing was switched on in mid-December – the project team would like to thank the local community for their patience and co-operation throughout.

There are some minor works to complete at the crossing in the new year, as well as some gully replacements near Chedlee Drive in co-ordination with our programme of planned maintenance. These works will require the occasional use of temporary traffic lights.
