Road closures and diversions

1. Market Place and Underbanks
We created a new scheme in the Market Place and Underbanks to:
- further limit access to vehicles in the area
- enhance safety
- provide an improved environment for those walking and cycling
The new automatic bollards are to improve safety by preventing vehicle movements in the area at unauthorised times.
Permanent road closures
Churchgate and Millgate
Closed to through traffic at all times, creating a traffic free link between St Mary’s Church and the Market Place.
St Petersgate Bridge
Closed to through traffic at all times, with a through route for pedestrians and cyclists maintained.
Mealhouse Brow
Closed to through traffic at all times, with a through route for pedestrians and cyclists maintained.
Market Place
No access between 10:30am and midnight, Monday to Sunday. On Friday and Saturday, the restrictions begin at 7am. Access to the Mealhouse Brow side of the Market Hall will be from Churchgate only. Between the Market Hall and Produce Hall is closed at all times.
Lower Hillgate and Little Underbank to Royal Oak Yard
No access between 10:30am and 4pm to and from the automatic bollards by the brewery. Waiting and loading restrictions between 8am and 6pm. Read our news article for details about the waiting and loading restrictions.
Little Underbank beyond Royal Oak Yard, under the bridge, and Great Underbank
No access between 10.30am and midnight. Entry to this area will be from Lower Hillgate via Little Underbank / Bridge Street only, exit via Chestergate.
Royal Oak Yard car park
The Royal Oak Yard car park will still be accessible during the existing hours. From 4pm to midnight, access will be via the existing bollards at Hillgate, by the brewery. After midnight but before 10:30am you can also exit via Great Underbank.
