Overview
To vote in an election or referendum, you must be on the electoral register. Everyone who is eligible to vote is responsible for registering themselves.
What you need to register
You'll need to provide certain information in order to register to vote. This includes your:
- full name
- address
- date of birth
- National Insurance number
If you cannot find your National Insurance number, you can:
- visit GOV.UK to find a lost national insurance number online
- call the NI helpline on 0300 200 3502
If you still cannot find it, or have not been given a National Insurance number yet, you may be able to provide alternative documentary evidence.

Electoral register
The Electoral Register is published on an annual basis, with updates published periodically throughout the year. The 2024 Electoral Register was published on 1 December 2023. The 2025 Electoral Register is expected to be published on 2 December 2024.
There are no monthly updates to the register in October and November due to the Annual Canvass.

You must have submitted your registration by 18 June 2024 to be able to vote in the general election on Thursday 4 July 2024.
