Overview
To vote in an election or referendum, you must be on the electoral register. Everyone who is eligible to vote is responsible for registering themselves.
What you need to register
You'll need to provide certain information in order to register to vote. This includes your:
- full name
- address
- date of birth
- National Insurance number
If you cannot find your National Insurance number, you can:
- visit GOV.UK to find a lost National Insurance number online
- call the NI helpline on 0300 200 3502
If you still cannot find it, or have not been given a National Insurance number yet, you may be able to provide alternative documentary evidence.

Electoral register
The Electoral Register is published on an annual basis, with updates published periodically throughout the year. The 2026 Electoral Register was published on 1 December 2025. The 2027 Electoral Register is expected to be published on 1 December 2026.

Please note that in order to vote in the 7 May 2026 elections you must have submitted your application by Monday 20 April 2026.
