Rediscovering the Underbanks

1. Overview
In early 2017 we were awarded a Stage 1 of a Townscape Heritage grant for the 'Rediscovering the Underbanks' project.
Working with the local community and businesses, the project will help breathe new life into the area, celebrating its truly unique townscape. ‘Rediscover the Underbanks’ will support a range of projects aimed at transforming Stockport’s historic high street into a vibrant destination for businesses and visitors, whilst also telling the area’s stories to new audiences.
The grant scheme is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to refurbish buildings in historic town centres. Townscape Heritage projects aim to support communities and increase business confidence by investing in historic areas. This results in an attractive and lively environment to live and work.
The scheme includes improvements to property and the local area, skills training and community events designed to bring people into the area. We have now submitted a detailed Stage 2 Application to HLF and are waiting for their National Board’s decision later in 2018. After the money has been awarded, the project will run for five years.
