We’re replacing the bridge deck on Queens Road Bridge, which carries Queens Road over Micker Brook in Cheadle Hulme. The bridge was built in 1959 and structural assessments have confirmed that its strength will continue to deteriorate over time.
To keep residents, road users and businesses safe, and to protect this important local route, the bridge deck will be fully replaced starting in Autumn 2026.
This project is funded through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlements (CRSTS) programme.
Why this work is needed
The bridge has been under a 7.5‑tonne weight restriction since 2007 to prevent further damage.
Structures made from High Alumina Concrete such as Queens Road Bridge weaken as moisture penetrates the road surfacing.
Refurbishment is not possible, full deck replacement is the only safe long‑term solution.
Without this work, the bridge would face increasing restrictions and a risk of future closure.
What the project will deliver
The project will:
- maintain Queens Road as a local strategic transport corridor
- support future bus network planning
- avoid diversion routes that impact other residential streets
- improve walking and cycling connectivity
- reduce congestion and journey time delays caused by current restrictions
What to expect during the works
Construction is expected to begin in Autumn 2026 and continue into 2027. We'll carry out the work in phases to minimise disruption where possible.
