Cross cutting themes
To be the best place to live happy and healthy lives, we must have a relentless focus on the biggest challenges facing our borough:
Fair and inclusive: Stockport is a borough for everyone – a place where diversity and inclusion is celebrated, and everyone has equity of opportunity.
Climate change and nature: creating a greenprint for Stockport so it is a climate-friendly place to live, work, play and invest.
These priorities cut across all our work and are core priorities of this Council Plan as well as our One Stockport, One Future partnership plan.
Fair and inclusive
Our vision is for Stockport to be a great, diverse place to live where everyone can thrive.
We know that experiences of poverty, where people live and other factors can interact to affect wellbeing and quality of life. In building a fair and inclusive Stockport, we want to make sure that the needs of all our residents are considered in how services are designed and delivered, and that we address the additional barriers that particular groups face.
Our key areas of focus will be:
to root our equalities and anti-poverty work in the lived experience of people and communities across Stockport
to deliver against our Equality and Anti-Poverty Objectives, including strengthening equality-based community networks and improving how we work as an organisation through more inclusive service delivery, supporting and empowering our workforce and increasing diversity
to embed best-practice on equalities and anti-poverty and model good practice on fair and inclusive as a significant employer and anchor institution in Stockport
to work with partners and businesses across Stockport to demonstrate our visible commitment to a fair and inclusive approach
Climate and nature
Our climate emergency declaration means that we recognise urgent action is needed to reduce emissions and adapt to the effects of extreme weather and warming temperatures. The One Stockport Climate and Nature strategy 2025 to 2030 and work programme sets out our commitment to tackling climate change and enhancing the natural environment.
Our ambition is for Stockport to be carbon neutral by 2038, and for Stockport Council to be operationally net zero by 2030.
Many of the areas of focus for climate and nature are especially powerful because they involve interventions to reduce carbon, tackle poverty, and improve health. These interventions include green jobs, active travel measures and energy efficiency.
You can find more information on our climate change pages.
Our key areas of focus will be:
to deliver our Climate and Nature Strategy 2025 to 2030 focusing on low carbon buildings, renewable energy, sustainable transport and nature based solutions
to embed and mainstream climate action and resilience into how we work as a council
to develop ways to assess and improve the impact that the services we deliver have on climate, nature and the health of our residents
to collaborate with young people, communities and businesses to raise awareness, educate and act on climate change, working together to create a climate and nature friendly Stockport
to maximise opportunities to grow our green economy and make Stockport an attractive place for green investment and jobs
