Wincey’s story
Former kickboxing World Champion Wincey still trains and now teaches.
Wincey, from Cheadle in Stockport, began her journey into sport and fitness entirely by accident. A primary school teacher first spotted her potential after watching her simply move from one side of the gym to the other. With parents who had emigrated from Hong Kong and China, Wincey’s family were grateful that this teacher helped her get connected to local sports opportunities.
At just 10 years old, Wincey joined her first gymnastics club, and never looked back. Her love for movement grew into a passion for all things sporty, taking part in netball, trampolining, athletics, and hockey at county level throughout secondary school. Today, she still loves to stay active, playing mixed touch rugby in local leagues and proving she can turn her hand to anything.
Gymnastics remained a huge part of her life, and by age 14 she began coaching, supporting the next generation of gymnasts for over 20 years. But it wasn’t until she turned 18 that she discovered the sport that would make her a World Champion.
“At university, I joined a kickboxing club and found that I really enjoyed it — the discipline, the excitement of sparring,” Wincey says. “My proudest sporting moment was winning the World Championships in Portugal in 2014. I won in three different categories for my weight — light contact, points, and kata. My parents were so proud!”
Wincey still trains and now teaches kickboxing, passing on her skills to her daughter who's just beginning her kickboxing journey. “There’s no pressure for her to continue, but right now she’s loving it. It feels amazing to be her inspiration and a positive role model.”
Her message to other girls is simple: “Just have a go — anything’s possible.”
