Support Worker Supervisor

I started my career back in 1992 as a support worker for Stockport Council, back then and for the first time, people were coming out of long stay hospitals into their own homes. Some found the transition easy, others not so. I knew from that moment that I wanted to support people to be as independent as possible.

I have had the opportunity to progress with my career and I am currently a support worker supervisor. Stockport Council and particularly, Opportunities Together, not only provide opportunities for those we support, but also the staff who work for them. I have completed NVQ’s, in both Care and Management, along with a foundation degree in Health and Social Care and also a teacher trainer qualification, all funded by Opportunities Together and Stockport Council. I now deliver training to staff in various subjects.

Opportunities Together have a great training program for staff, which equips you to work in many situations with confidence. They have Positive Behaviour training which is very informative and builds awareness about how people communicate, which I think is invaluable. I have applied to become a Positive Behaviour trainer, teaching staff in Positive Behaviour Management, which has been encouraged by management.

During my career, I have worked in various locations within Stockport, each one different, not only by location, but also who lives there. Having the opportunity to work with new people is exciting and interesting.

I currently work in the Opportunities Together Day Centre, offering activities to people with a wide range of abilities, every day is different, which I love. Sometimes, when I think about all I have achieved and all I have helped others achieve, I have to remind myself I have been doing it for 30 years as it doesn’t feel that long.

Working with people is a very rewarding role that I would recommend to anyone.
