Robert's story
Speech and language support
Through close collaboration between the SENCO at Adswood Primary School and the speech and language therapist, we were able to make a real difference for Robert, a Year 1 pupil with additional speech needs and attendance challenges. Using evidence from the Balanced System and research from other projects, the SENCO secured funding from the school budget to train a member of support staff as a Communication Champion across Early Years and Key Stage 1.
This new Communication Champion role has been invaluable. Working alongside our speech and language therapist, they deliver a daily intervention programme designed by the complex speech team. This consistent input means Robert doesn’t have to wait weeks for reviews and support is ongoing and responsive.
The impact has been clear. Robert’s mum has noticed huge progress in his speech, and this has been echoed by the family support coordinator involved in the Team Around the Family process. Together, we’ve also worked hard to improve Robert’s attendance, showing just how important daily input can be.
Building trust has been key. Our link therapist has developed strong relationships within the school community, and Robert’s mum, who previously struggled to attend appointments due to her own trauma and mental health, has now agreed to join a coaching session where the intervention will be modelled. This is a big step forward.
The highlight has been a phone call from Robert’s mum, who said: “Now that I can talk better with my son, I had the confidence to take him to the park and let him play with other children without worrying he’ll get picked on.”
