Luna’s story

Reclaiming confidence at home

Oven gloves and a tray of cakes

Luna* loves being creative, especially in the kitchen. Activities like baking are an important outlet for her – multiple health challenges mean she’s unable to work and needs a powered wheelchair to get around her home, as well as daily support from carers.

But an impractical ground floor flat was limiting Luna’s ability to do the things she loved. Her biggest frustration? A kitchen too small to move in, and cupboards and countertops too high to reach.

That’s where our Equipment, Adaptations and Sensory Team stepped in. After thorough assessments from an Occupational Therapist, they worked closely with Luna, Stockport Homes and specialist designers to create a kitchen tailored to her needs. They installed a new breakfast bar, lowered the units and relocated the oven to a more practical location. They renovated her bathroom too, repositioning the grab rails and adding a wash / dry toilet to reduce Luna’s risk of falling.

These adaptations haven’t just transformed Luna’s home, they’ve also transformed her quality of life. It’s the little things – like being able to get her own snacks and drinks or checking for herself what groceries she has in her cupboards.

While Luna still requires support from carers, this extra bit of independence means she can now look forward to using her kitchen as well as getting back into baking.

Luna says it best herself: “My new kitchen gives me confidence.”

With Luna’s permission, her story was showcased at the 2025 Stockport Council Adult Social Care Practice Day. It’s proof of how effective adaptations can enable our service users to reclaim their independence, and a testament to the hard work of our Equipment, Adaptations and Sensory Team.
