Kirstie's story

Moving forward with confidence

A pair of brown sandals on a black mat next to a pair of beige brogues.

It came as a huge shock to Kirstie when she was registered blind. She’d been getting treatment for glaucoma, but hadn’t realised her vision had got so bad.

Kirstie worried she’d no longer be able to socialise or go for the daily walks she loves. She had no idea about the options available to her, and was anxious about how she might cope with losing her sight entirely. She was determined to get support.

Our Rehabilitation Officer Visual Impairment (ROVI) met Kirstie to assess her needs. She was already successfully using anti-glare and smart AI sunglasses, but our ROVI identified other equipment that would make Kirstie’s life a little easier.

This included tools like cut-proof chopping gloves and a special kettle to make cooking safer, as well as television glasses, optical magnifiers and a floor standing lamp. Thanks to home demos from our ROVI, Kirstie learned to feel confident using them by herself.

She also got tips on things like making her mobile phone more accessible and maintaining better light levels in her house. These small changes have made a big difference to her home life.

Outside the home, Kirstie’s also making great progress. She was referred for a long cane to support her mobility, and she’s already had training on navigating streets, footpaths and public transport safely. Aided by her new Blue Badge and bus pass, she’s excited to continue socialising and enjoying her daily walks.

It’s not all been smooth sailing. Some of Kirstie’s home adaptations have been delayed, and her initial referral to a low-vision clinic had to be repeated.

Even so, the support has been life-changing. Kirstie’s now getting the benefits she’s entitled to and is pursuing sight loss counselling. Soon, she’ll complete more mobility training with Guide Dogs.

It’s a massive boost to Kirstie’s confidence and a big step towards the independent lifestyle she craves.
