Home Support Worker (REaCH)
Simon
I personally fell into care work 24 years ago and it can be said that working at Stockport Council for the past 14 years has been the most enjoyable work experience I've had.

The most important aspect of the role of the home support worker (HSW) is my fellow colleagues who are the most compassionate and caring people I've ever known
A typical shift is checking your visits on your personal tablet which is on the new PASS system and for any new visits which you will need to familiarise yourself with. Any support that is needed is just a phone call away with the excellent LEADS who manage all phone calls and emails, if further support is required then the marvellous management team are on hand if needed.
Each visit can be different and can be completed with a variety of different issues, ranging from personal care to medications or just making sure that all tasks have been completed safely, as they become independent and leave our service as it's only a short-term support period.
The role of the HSW is to have plenty of patience and give lots of encouragement, as the service users complete each goal over the weeks with a sense of humour and plenty of common sense, which is key. Some visits can be tough, but the HSW is given plenty of training and is always up to date with all policies and procedures. The best part of the role is achieving all goals with the service user and experiencing the joy of living independently again.
I really enjoy my job as being a HSW and can honestly say that I cannot see myself working anywhere else.
