Gillian's story
Assistive technology has transformed Gillian's experience of school
Gillian, a primary school pupil in Stockport, had missed a significant amount of school and was working well below national curriculum standards. She often felt anxious and disengaged in class, which made learning a real challenge.
Working together, the School Inclusion, School Effectiveness and Speech and Language services introduced Gillian to assistive technology, including Google Chrome voice-to-type and widget communication symbols. These tools transformed her experience of school. Gillian is now confidently producing her own work using voice-to-text and symbols, showing a clear understanding of the topics that she’s learning.
This success was made possible through collaboration. School staff attended Assistive Technology Champions training, and services worked together to identify and assess Gillian’s needs and implement the right strategies. Gillian’s story shows how the right support can unlock potential and help children thrive.
