Ethel's fresh start
Ethel, an older Stockport resident, was becoming isolated as her mobility declined and her flat no longer met her needs.
Ethel was referred for assessment after safeguarding concerns were raised, as her flat had become far too small for her needs. She could no longer use her bathroom safely because the space was too restricted for her mobility. She used a frame to walk, and the limited space had led to significant clutter. Ethel spoke about feeling isolated as she rarely went out and relied on carers 4 times a day for all aspects of daily life.
With support from her social worker, she moved into nearby Extra Care Housing, where she could live more safely and independently.
Ethel quickly settled into her new environment, enjoying communal spaces and forming new friendships. Her confidence soared. She now showers independently, spends time outdoors, and has reduced her care package thanks to her regained independence.
Ethel even ordered a mobility scooter to further connect with her community. She describes her social worker as “an angel,” reflecting the positive impact of the support she received
Since moving, Ethel has made new friends, regained confidence, reduced her care support, and is enjoying being part of her community again. Her story shows how the right housing and person-centred support can make a real difference.
