I applied for a job with REaCH after 20 years of hairdressing and got an interview, and then following that was accepted to join the night assessment team. I had never worked for a big company before and worried that I would find it hard.

I wanted a change of profession and a new challenge. I had small children and decided that I would be able to work the night shifts to give me a better work life balance.

My induction was great, I met new people and enjoyed the challenge of learning new skills. I had done a GNVQ in Health and Social Care at school but never went in to care when I left. Hairdressing had great transferable skills, talking and listening to people and enjoying making people feel good.

Joining the REaCH team as a night assessment member I have since moved over to the day support team after 3 years of nights and progressed further to become a LEAD for the intake team. I really enjoy my current role which involves visiting people at their homes following discharge from hospital or when a referral has been made by a social worker, GP or family member. An initial planning meeting will then be completed by myself or one of my team with the service user. This is a person centred and detailed assessment of the support a person requires to be independent once again at home. Reviews are completed then weekly by my team with the service user, to discuss how well they are managing and if they have an area that they are still struggling.

We are a short-term service, meeting new people every day. I really enjoy supporting each individual to manage their own support need and watch them grow with confidence along the process. I can honestly say I should not have worried about fitting into a large service or to change my career. I have really enjoyed the last 5 years plus working with REaCH, we do have ups and downs and there are pressures working in the Health and Social Care industry but my colleagues are so supportive and the difference we make to other people’s lives make it all worthwhile.
