Becoming a Dementia Champion
Beryl was caring for her husband who had dementia and knows first-hand the isolation people with dementia and their carers can feel.
Beryl, said: “I wanted to create a Dementia Friendly Community in the Heatons so people with dementia and their carers didn’t have to travel far for support. Also to raise awareness that making small changes can help people with dementia be better supported to stay involved with their communities.
“This led to me signing up as a Dementia Friend and then a Dementia Champion. I’m delivering face-to-face information sessions, encouraging people to stop being frightened and see the person through the condition. My target is to create 100 Dementia Friends.”
People don't need to have any particular experience or skillset to be a Dementia Friends Champion. You just need to attend a one day training session – visit the Dementia Friends website to find out more.
