Enjoying life at home and in the community

Annabelle* lives with her husband in the home they have shared for many years. Family, friends and her local community are very important to her, but as her hearing loss increased, everyday life became more challenging.

Although she uses hearing aids, Annabelle found it difficult to follow conversations, especially in group settings or when there was background noise. Watching television was frustrating, and she often did not hear when someone came to the door. Over time, this began to affect her confidence and enjoyment of daily life.

After being referred to Adult Social Care, Annabelle was supported by the council’s Equipment Adaptations and Sensory Service. An assessment helped identify what would make the biggest difference alongside her hearing aids. With support from the Handyperson Service, a flashing doorbell and a TV loop were installed, with other equipment provided to help her hear family and friends more clearly when they speak, making conversations feel more natural. A follow up visit made sure everything was working well for her.

The change was immediate and meaningful. She said:

I can follow conversations properly now and really enjoy watching my favourite programmes again without the frustration I used to feel. It has brought back a real sense of ease and comfort to something I love doing, and I feel much more relaxed in my own home.

These simple adjustments have helped Annabelle feel more confident, connected and able to continue enjoying the home and community she loves.
