Before you apply for a licence

Check our approved private hire vehicle list.

If the vehicle you'd like to licence is not listed, contact taxi.licensing@stockport.gov.uk

To submit your application you'll need:

  • vehicle V5 log book, all pages
  • utility bill or bank statement, issued within the last 3 months, showing your current name and address
  • fully comprehensive insurance for Reward or Hire
  • where the vehicle has been modified you must provide evidence of individual vehicle approval from the DVLA or evidence that this is not needed

If you do not have the vehicle V5 log book, you'll also need:

  • a receipt on headed paper, or a hand written receipt clearly showing the stamp of the garage the vehicle was bought from
  • a bill of sale, if bought privately, from the old owner of the vehicle showing the name, address, phone number and signature of both the old and new owners
  • new keepers supplement from the V5 green slip

If you do not submit all the required documents, there may be a delay in your application.

  • £190 for one year. This is non-refundable

As a licensed private hire vehicle you must make sure that:

  • your vehicle is always capable of passing it's taxi vehicle test. If your vehicle fails it's test you will not get a refund of the licence fee
  • your name, address, mobile number and email address are kept up to date. This is a condition of your licence. If there are any changes to your personal details email taxi.licensing@stockport.gov.uk so that you can continue to receive important updates. Note: we are not running surgeries, appointments or drop-in sessions at this time
