  • contact details (for example, name, address, phone number, email)
  • demographic information (for example, age, gender)
  • national unique identifiers (for example, National Insurance number)
  • health data (for example, relevant medical information or accessibility needs)
  • financial information (for example, bursary eligibility)
  • employment data (for example, previous work experience)
  • education data (for example, school or college attended, qualifications)
  • social care information (where relevant)

What is the legal basis for using your information?

We only use your personal information when we have a lawful reason to do so. For work experience placements, this includes:

  • Article 6(1)(c) – Processing is necessary to comply with a legal obligation
  • Article 6(1)(e) – Processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority

This means we use your information to:

  • meet our legal responsibilities, and statutory duties to promote access to education and training providers, including work experience opportunities
  • support work experience and employment schemes that help people in our communities develop skills, gain experience, and move into work

The laws that guide this processing include:

  • The Localism Act 2011, which gives councils the general power of competence to act in ways that benefit the community, including supporting schemes that promote employment, education, and social mobility through work experience schemes

Depending on your individual circumstances, we may rely on one or more of these legal reasons to process your information in line with our public responsibilities.

Where we process special category data (for example, health or ethnicity data), we rely on:

  • Article 9(2)(b): necessary for carrying out obligations in the field of employment and social protection law. For example, to ensure a safe and supportive placement
  • Article 9(2)(g): necessary for reasons of substantial public interest, as set out in the Data Protection Act 2018

For criminal offence data, we process it under:

  • Schedule 1, Part 2 of the Data Protection Act 2018: substantial public interest conditions, such as safeguarding of children and individuals at risk

  • JumpStart, where they are involved in coordinating or supporting your placement
  • central government departments
  • schools, colleges, or other education providers
  • other local authorities

Who do we share your information with?

  • schools, colleges, or other education providers involved in your placement
  • other departments within the council, where necessary to support your placement, ensure safeguarding, or meet legal and administrative requirements
  • JumpStart, where they are involved in coordinating or supporting your placement
  • the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), if a background check is required for your placement
  • other public bodies or partner organisations, where required by law or where necessary to protect your safety or the safety of others

How long will we keep your information?

Personal information collected is subject to Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council’s records management policies and procedures and will be held in accordance with the council’s records retention schedule. Generally, we will retain your information for 6 years from the date your work experience placement ends.

Transferring your information outside of the European Union (EU)

We will not transfer your information outside of the EU.

For this service all the decisions we make about you involve human intervention.
